Get Ready for a Remake of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes

Neatorama flags the return of the campy killer-tomato concept with the new Organic Intelligence film.

Neatorama took the long view, starting with what the 1978 original actually was: a deliberate spoof of the cheap monster pictures of the 1950s and 60s, made for very little money and reviewed badly.

And then the detail that explains everything since — it made back five times its budget, and kept going. Four more films, a cartoon, and a fanbase that never let go.

On the new one, Miss Cellania notes the February premiere aboard the USS Midway Museum in San Diego, the August 7 limited release across New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Diego, and one striking piece of casting: John Astin, reportedly appearing at age 96, back as Professor Gangreen.

There is also an observation nobody else made — the release is timed to tomato harvest season.
