Fifth film in San Diego franchise 'Attack of the Killer Tomatoes' hits theaters Friday
The San Diego Union-Tribune marks the theatrical opening of the fifth film in San Diego's homegrown Killer Tomatoes franchise, hitting theaters Friday.
The San Diego Union-Tribune covered the release as what it is locally: a hometown story. The franchise began in San Diego in 1978, the new film shot there, and the fifth entry opened in the city the week of August 7, 2026.
Co-creator J. Stephen Peace — later a California state senator, and still the man in the parachute as Wilbur Finletter — co-wrote and produced alongside fellow co-creator Costa Dillon, with David Ferino directing.
The paper also noted the film’s February premiere aboard the USS Midway Museum, where portions were filmed, with proceeds benefiting veteran programmes through the USS Midway Foundation.
