THE BUZZ: 2025 TOP 10 EVENTS IMPACTING SAN DIEGO’S INDIE FILM COMMUNITY

Year-end round-ups are a fun way to reflect on what’s been happening in our community, look ahead on for what’s to come, and get a sense of where we’re at in the grand scheme of things. So, we took a look back at 2025 happenings in the film industry as well as the local scene and selected the top 10 that had the biggest impact. What we found was, overall, 2025 was a banner year for the San Diego indie film community. Events inside and outside of our region had an impact on San Diego’s filmmaking outlook, potential, and growth. And while what’s to come is anyone’s guess, the trend is clearly tracking upward.

Announcement of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes fifth franchise movie, Organic Intelligence

This home-town cult classic franchise produced another installment of its series, and once again, kept the filming and production right here in San Diego. The impact to the community, besides employing local talent and crew, was the message that our region has the resources and infrastructure to support upper, low-budget films. See item seven.

Just when you thought it was safe ... the Killer Tomatoes are back and more lethal than ever. That's right. The Killer Tomatoes are back for a fifth time in the new film "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence." Since part of the film was shot on the USS Midway, the fear-inspiring fruits held a special private party and screening onboard the Navy vessel this past Friday.

'Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes' Is The Most Absurd Franchise In Movie History

What started as a student project became one of the best homicidal fruit franchises to date, mostly because of the earnest effort that went into the making of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. It's one of the strangest, if not silliest B-movies ever produced. Originally released in 1978, the titular killer tomatoes became legendary villains of campy horror and inspired three sequels. The film came together because of the sincere efforts of the cast and crew, but the plot doesn't employ the same level of seriousness as its creators. Regardless of how you came upon the franchise, odds are you laughed while watching it, yet still wondered who was crazy enough to execute the idea in the first place. It has garnered quite the cult following, and these facts about Attack of the Killer Tomatoes might explain why.
